What to do with Tom McDonald?

The impending return of Melbourne swingman Tom McDonald could leave coach Simon Goodwin with a structural dilemma of where to deploy the versatile big man.

According to SEN news breaker Sam McClure, the 25-year-old’s rehab is going according to plan and while he is keen to take his place for the clash against Essendon in Round 6, a return via the VFL seems a more plausible scenario.

Speaking on SEN’s The Match Committee, former Western Bulldogs and Richmond coach Terry Wallace has contemplated where McDonald would be best utilised.

“Is he better back, or is he better forward?" he said.

“I think he’s played his best football forward. It’s a smaller sample of him as a forward than what it was as a defender.

“I think he should play forward and they should try to hold up with the Oscar McDonald/Sam Frost/Jake Lever combination but with a ‘watch this space’.

“You saw Essendon do it (with Cale Hooker). You can throw them from one end of the ground to the other.”

WIN tickets to the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final and everything in GF week.

Correctly guess the total possessions in Round 5 of: Callan Ward (GWS), Josh Kennedy (WCE), Robbie Gray (PA), Patrick Dangerfield (GEE) & Ben Brown (NM). Eg.: 118
