What Hocking and AFL want to achieve with new rules

AFL football operations manager Steve Hocking says the competition committee and game analysis team has been tasked with implementing “subtle” changes to help open the game back up.

The competition committee made their recommendations to the AFL Commission yesterday, and Hocking has explained the reasoning behind the potential new rules.

“What we have been challenged to do as a game analysis group is to make sure the changes are subtle,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“We want to open the game back up, we want to see more of what Dustin Martin did from the half forward flank and slot it through, we want space available, we want players to take the game on.

“We have been challenged to normalise as much of our decision making as possible, so when the fans show up next year and all the football lovers, that they’re sitting in the stands and it’s subtle changes that has gone on but we can see more space in the game.

“The game is really healthy, no one within headquarters is knocking the game.

“It’s about how can we continue to advance the game and find the best version of it at all times.”
