Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says player wages should be made public.
AFL Players Association CEO Paul Marsh told NAB AFL Trade Radio last week he would have no issue with salaries going public, mentioning it could potentially see wages go up “significantly”.
However, Marsh also said the counterbalance would be the potential mental health effect it would have on the playing fraternity.
Lyon thinks if we knew how much players were earning, it would change the perception of how the public grades the moves teams make in the offseason.

“As I was reading through various stuff about trades and who is going to go where for what and all that, all of it is great but how can we make an assessment on what’s a good trade and what’s not a good trade if we don’t know how much money the players are getting paid?” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.
“I think player wages should be made public.”
Lyon also thinks it would enable greater knowledge as to how clubs like Greater Western Sydney have suffered a salary cap squeeze.
