Former Socceroos goalkeeper Clint Bolton has voiced his disapproval of Melbourne City’s transfer policy after failing to deliver a big-name signing during the offseason.
City made a number of additions to their squad ahead of the new A-League campaign including marquee man Ritchie De Laet on loan from Championship club Aston Villa, former Newcastle United defender Curtis Good and winger Michael O’Halloran from Scottish giants Rangers.
Bolton says the City Football Group are using the A-League side as a feeder club rather than looking to invest in order to compete and win major silverware.
“I think the decision in not chasing big-name signings to draw in more fans to the games and more members speaks volumes,” Bolton told SEN Afternoons.
“Melbourne City doesn’t have a big supporter base as it is.
"Off the back of (Daniel) Arzani being moved within the network and also Aaron Mooy, I firmly believe the attitude now is that we’re going to pump our money into youth in this country, but not necessarily look to be overly ambitious and win things."
Warren Joyce’s men take on rivals Melbourne Victory in tomorrow night’s Melbourne Derby at Marvel Stadium.
