Muscat provides injury update on star striker Toivonen

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat says they’re erring on the side of caution over the fitness of big-name signing Ola Toivonen.

The Swede currently has a niggling calf complaint that has forced him to miss the opening two games of the A-League season.

“Ola was coming from a lower base and he is going very well,” Muscat told SEN Breakfast.

“We took as much care as possible with him and he got to a point where he is a little bit too sore to carry on.

“He’s calf at the moment, we’ll take no chances. We’ve got two games and then an international break so there’s no game that weekend.

“I don’t see any point going too hard on him considering the amount of football we’ve got left to play.”

Toivinen joined the Victory from French side Toulouse after playing and scoring for Sweden during the World Cup in Russia.
