Western Bulldogs star midfielder Marcus Bontempelli has explained his reasoning for only signing a two-year contract extension with the club.
Bontempelli today re-signed with the club through to the end of 2021 and will become a free agent when that deal expires.
The 22-year-old said the shorter deal helps keep him focused.
“It may work for some players to extend a bit longer, but I’ve always signed two-year extensions,” Bontempelli told SEN’s Time On.
“There’s a bit of intrinsic value for me to continue to stay accountable to what I want to achieve.
“As an induvial player I think I’ve got a lot of growth ahead of me and it keeps me invested from day to day.
“Both parties are really happy, it’s great to have got the deal done this side of Christmas.”
Bontempelli said he wants to take his game to the next level by becoming more consistent on a weekly basis.
“In my view, my last two years, I would’ve liked to have been better,” he said.
“I guess from a consistency point of view, I want to be a more dynamic player game to game.
“Being able to consistently play at a high standard on a regular player is what I think every player is chasing.
“From a leadership point of view I want to do my best to help guide this young team into the future.”
