The Western Bulldogs have halted their VFL program amid coronavirus fears.
SEN’s chief sports reporter Sam Edmund says the Bulldogs have followed Richmond’s lead by shutting down their activity at VFL level for the time being.
“The VFL would have to be on its knees at the moment,” he said on SEN Breakfast.
“The staff at the Western Bulldogs have been told, players included, not to bother coming to training and don’t worry about the practice games for now. Just park yourself.
“That’s my understanding at the moment.
“If Richmond have already broken the ice there and said, ‘We’re out’. Western Bulldogs are out as well, it’s hard to see how it would go ahead. It’s impossible.
“All sorts of things happening by the hour, as we know.”
The news comes after it was announced the AFL Players’ Association would hold a briefing call with all 1240 AFL and AFLW players to try and find a solution for what’s ahead.
The AFL season is set to kick off this Thursday night with Richmond hosting Carlton at the MCG.
At this stage, the 2020 VFL season is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 3 but there are suggestions it could be suspended.
Fair chance the AFL will soon announce that the VFL season is being suspended. Clubs fear it will be cancelled, which would put the stand-alones under enormous financial strain. Let’s hope the league helps them through...
