Who makes up the Greatest All-Australian Team of the AFL Era?

Our search for the Greatest All-Australian Team of the AFL Era is coming into it’s final week.

In conjunction with Red Energy, we’ve been leaning on the SEN faithful to vote for who they think should make the combined best All-Australian side since the AFL’s inception in 1990.

A player simply qualifies for selection if he has been selected for an All-Australian side (including the 1990 Team of the Year).

Up to now we have sorted our back six, forward line, plus the ruckman and two of the three starting on-ballers.

DEFENCE

Gavin Wanganeen and Glenn Archer fill the back pocket slots with a nice mix of dash, dare, skill and toughness. They are either side of one of the best full-backs in the history of the game in Stephen Silvagni.

The stylish Andrew McLeod provides the run, carry and quality delivery out of defence with fellow dual Norm Smith Medallist Luke Hodge organising all alongside Matthew Scarlett who was as adept at playing centre half-back as he was deeper.

MIDFIELD

Dean Cox was the dominant ruckman of his era and will give first use to centre man Michael Voss and ruck-rover Chris Judd in what is a star-studded on-ball assembly, still with one player to come!

FORWARDS

The forward line has quality everywhere. Starting with the half-forward line of James Hird, Wayne Carey and Lance Franklin. At their best (or even going half-paced) these guys are almost unstoppable and are fully deserving of their spot in the side.

Eddie Betts will operate as the crumbing small forward at the feet of the competition’s greatest ever goalkicker Tony Lockett and the mercurial Gary Ablett Senior.

To come

This Monday, we will sort the third starting midfield position before looking ahead to the wingers, interchange bench and coach.
