Bennell, who played 81 games over five years for the Gold Coast Suns, kicked just his fourth goal since leaving the club at the end of 2015, and finished the match with 13 disposals.
Izak Rankine showcased his talent for the Suns, kicking 3 goals from 12 disposals in his first senior AFL match to mount a case for the round 6 Rising Star nomination.
Christian Petracca continued his impressive form for Melbourne, collecting 25 disposals and kicking 2 goals, including 1 with just 2 minutes remaining in the contest that iced the match.
Gold Coast travel to the Sydney Cricket Ground to face the Sydney Swans next Saturday night while Melbourne take on Hawthorn at Giants Stadium next Sunday afternoon.
