The AFL will today announce the Gabba as the host of the 2020 Grand Final.
With the game unable to take place in Victoria because of COVID-19, the AFL had to choose between Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales to stage the showpiece event.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has flown to Brisbane and will make the announcement at some stage on Wednesday.
The game will reportedly take place in either a twilight or night fixture on October 24th in order to accommodate the running of the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in Melbourne.
The Grand Final is contracted to take place at the MCG until 2057 and in order to move the game to Queensland, the Victorian government has negotiated a one-year extension of that deal, according to The Age’s Sam McClure.
On top of that, the MCG will host more games than originally planned in 2021 and Victoria will be the home of two of the next three National Drafts.
Reports suggest South Australia finished second in the race to host the big event, despite the attempts of the West Australian government.
