Why Essendon “better get moving” on “strange” Saad contract situation

Adam Saad’s contract status at Essendon remains unconfirmed with the dashing defender yet to re-sign with the club.

A report just last week indicated that opposition clubs are circling the 26-year-old who comes out of contract at season’s end.

SEN’s Sam Edmund admits it is a “strange” situation which has not progressed at all as the end of the 2020 season rapidly approaches.

“I’ve made a few calls on Adam Saad,” Edmund said on SEN Breakfast.

“That’s a real strange one. It’s not like talks haven’t been taking place, they have been, but they’re just not getting anywhere (between) the two parties there.

“The longer it goes, the more chance he is of leaving.”

Hawthorn premiership player Jordan Lewis suggested Bombers fans would be feeling nervous about Saad who is a player the club should be working hard to tie down as soon as possible.

“It would be hard for an Essendon (fan),” Lewis added.

“Because he would be the player you’d want to lock away really quickly.

“So whatever is happening behind the doors at Essendon, they better get moving.”

The former Gold Coast half-back flanker has been one of his side’s most consistent players this year and is expected to finish at the top end in the club’s best and fairest count.

Along with Saad, the likes of Andrew McGrath, Joe Daniher and the enormously improved Jordan Ridley are all without contracts for 2021 at this point in time.

The Dons finish off their disappointing 2020 season, which has yielded six wins and a draw from 16 games, against Melbourne at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
