Suns “open-minded” about trading contracted first-round pick

Gold Coast remain “open-minded” about trading forward Peter Wright, according to Suns GM of Football Operations Jon Haines.

Wright, who is contracted until the end of 2022, didn’t make a senior appearance in 2020 casting doubt over his future at the Suns.

Standing at 203cm, the 24-year-old was selected with eighth pick overall in the 2014 National Draft and has kicked 85 goals in 66 games.

“Guys who are that height, who kick the ball really well, and get around the ground are going to generate interest,” Haines told AFL Media.

“From our point of view, Pete is contracted but he’s within his rights to understand what level of interest is out there as well.

“I think the bottom line is we‘ll be open-minded, but he sits as a contracted player.”

Wright’s Suns teammate Will Brodie was also starved of opportunities playing just one game this season.

Brodie, 22, extended his contract through to 2022 last year but the midfielder has been linked with an off-season move to Essendon.

"We understand also he (Brodie) is a really driven young man that wants to play AFL footy," Haines said.

"In terms of this upcoming trade period there's no doubt there will probably be interest from other clubs in a player like Will, so we just need to see how that plays out.

"We believe in Will, we're committed to him."

Brodie, selected with the ninth pick overall in the 2016 National Draft, has played 20 games for the Suns.
