Brendon Goddard's 2021 best 22 for Collingwood

Brendon Goddard has gone through Collingwood’s best 22 heading into 2021.

The Magpies have been one of the more interesting teams of this trade period, with multiple contracted players reportedly up for grabs.

Goddard has factored that into this team, removing both Adam Treloar and Tom Phillips, though Jaidyn Stephenson and Mason Cox stick around.

See his best 22 from AFL Trade Radio below.

Backline

“The backline was pretty easy to be honest. Jeremy Howe, Jordan Roughead and John Noble__, but we had a good conversation about maybe Isaac Quaynor being ahead of him next year. As of now Noble is ahead of Quaynor and doing a pretty good job.”

“It’s pretty solid. Jack Crisp hasn’t missed a game since he practically got drafted, Brayden Maynard has become one of the great half backs … and Darcy Moore.

Midfield

Josh Daicos I think progresses to a wing, he’ll spend a bit of time inside and I think that’s a natural progression with Treloar out, they can fill the mid spot with the development of Daicos.”

“The other sort of mainstay is Chris Mayne on the other wing and he’s got the ability to go back if someone’s injured. The midfield is pretty straightforward, Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, Steele Sidebottom, Scott Pendlebury.

“With Treloar out, Sidebottom played his best footy as an inside mid two years ago and came second in the Brownlow and was a best and fairest that year.

“That’s a better replacement in my opinion and adds a better mix between Adams and Pendlebury.”

Forward line

“This is where when you look at this and put it on paper and look at their strengths and weaknesses and stack them up against the best teams, this forward line just doesn’t stack up.”

Jaidyn Stephenson, I think he’ll return to his best footy, Brody Mihocek has been a great servant, but would play his best footy as a third tall and Will Kelly.

“Obviously we only saw 10 minutes of Kelly, but we liked it and they’ve been really happy with his development. Some may say I’m biased because of my association with Ned Kelly, I think they’re going to persist.

Jamie Elliott, Mason Cox and Jordan De Goey. Elliot we’ve seen spend time through the midfield, assuming that’s where they want to go again, I think it looks that way, he played some pretty solid footy in there.

“De Goey is the centrepiece to all of this. If he’s there and in form, everyone else gets out of the way.”

Interchange

“On the bench I’ve got Quaynor, Tyler Brown, Will Hoskin-Elliott, who can play forward or wing, and a question mark on the fourth. Do they run with Levi Greenwood? It depends on if it fits into their game-plan, I think Nathan Buckley likes having the tagger.”

“Darcy Cameron is another one, I don’t think they can play Cameron, Cox and Mihocek in the same team when everyone’s fit. Kelly might be the one that doesn’t play, but he offers something different.”
