Who will be the next coach of Queensland?

The Queensland Rugby League board is yet to decide on who will replace Wayne Bennett as Maroons coach.

It’s understood that Billy Slater and Paul Green are the two leading candidates to coach Queensland but the QRL failed to agree on Bennett’s successor on Friday.

Slater retired after a decorated playing career with Queensland and the Melbourne Storm at the end of 2018, while Green resigned as North Queensland Cowboys coach last July.

Former NSW Origin and Australia representative Bryan Fletcher thinks Slater will land the Queensland job ahead of Green.

“I would think if Billy Slater wanted the job, Billy Slater gets the job. Just because of the popularity of Billy,” Fletcher told SEN’s Pat and Heals.

“He’s been under Craig Bellamy so if he thinks he’s ready to coach up there, I would presume he’d get the job. But ‘Greeny’ (Paul Green) has got the experience of winning the competition (Cowboys in 2015).

“I don’t know whether they could work together. Reading between the lines it’s either one or the other.”

A final decision on who will coach the Maroons is expected to be made later next month.

Queensland, under master coach Bennett, shocked New South Wales to win last year’s State of Origin series.
