Paine in "no doubt" Smith wants to captain Australia again

Australian Test captain Tim Paine says Steve Smith has desires to take the top job once again.

Smith was famously axed as captain after the Cape Town sandpaper incident in 2018, and the Tasmanian has held the role ever since.

The world’s number one Test batsman served a 12-month leadership ban as a result of the incident, but as the suspension ended in 2019, talk has surfaced about Smith retaking the job.

Speaking on 1170 SEN Breakfast, Paine told Andrew Voss that he believes Smith would like to take the role again in the near future.

“We haven’t spoken about his captaincy as much, but certainly about captaincy as I’m always standing next to him in the slips and off the field having conversations about it,” Paine said.

“There’s no doubt he would like to do it again I think, but we’ll just have to see what happens in the next six to twelve months.”

Despite Smith having experience as captain and perhaps the leading candidate to replace Paine, the gloveman said the side would be looking at other options to eventually assume the role as well.

“Pat Cummins is someone we’re trying to upskill, but he’s one of many,” he added.

“There’s also Travis Head and there’s Marnus Labuschagne. So, there is a lot of guys.

“One of the things we’re trying to do is develop more leaders in our team and Steve Smith is certainly one of those.”
