Tyson Stengle’s AFL career is over, with confirmation of the forward’s sacking from the Adelaide Crows expected to come tomorrow following a string of off-field transgressions.
Stengle’s management, the Crows and the AFL Players’ Association have all but agreed on severance terms after months of delicate negotiations between the parties.
Stengle was contracted until the end of 2022 having signed a two-year deal as recently as August. But he will not be given another chance by the Crows, who will now pay out a portion of that contract.
The 22-year-old last year played 12 games under new coach Matthew Nicks, but instead made headlines away from the game with a string of alcohol and drug-related offences.
The forward has been in limbo since the Crows stood him down in December and has been training with SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens, who he played for as a junior.
Stengle was banned for four AFL matches and fined for drink-driving in an unregistered car in April. He was hit with another four-match ban in October after he was caught with drugs alongside then-teammate Brad Crouch in Adelaide a month earlier.
The final straw was a photo that was sent to the club showing Stengle next to a plate of an illicit substance.
Adelaide traded pick No.68 to acquire Stengle from Richmond in 2018.
Stengle played two games at the Tigers in 2017 before featuring 14 times for the Crows.
