Melbourne midfielder James Harmes has undergone surgery on a broken wrist.
Harmes is expected to miss around six weeks with the injury, which came in the Demons’ season-opener against Fremantle at the MCG.
Harmes played out the game against the Dockers, gathering 20 disposals and kicking a goal as medical sub Kade Chandler remained on the bench.
But he pulled up sore and scans on Monday revealed a scaphoid fracture. Harmes went under the knife later that day.
It’s a cruel blow for the onballer, who took huge strides forward in 2018 and 2019, thriving as a run-with player who hurt the opposition offensively. He finished third in the best and fairest in both seasons.
But he endured a difficult 2020 campaign that saw him dropped in the second half of the season. He then suffered a season-ending hamstring injury after only one game back.
