Premiership coach Mark 'Choco' Williams is lifting the kicking standards at Melbourne.
Williams joined the Demons as Head of Development and has quickly set about improving the poor skill level that contributed to Melbourne missing the finals in 2019 and 2020.
Demons defender Steven May detailed Williams’ obsession with demanding perfection when it comes to kicking accuracy.
“He’s a very passionate, smart man who shares the same view as me in terms of valuing kicking. I really value kicking in the game,” May told SEN’s Bob and Andy.
“It’s so important in terms of scoring and not having so many turnovers.
“'Choco' is mad about it – he’s obsessed about being perfect with every kick. He’ll stand there at every training session and watch every kick, and if it’s not perfect, he’ll let you know.
“Sometimes you can train and go through the motions and the skills drop off, but 'Choco' doesn’t allow that to happen at all.
“He’s been a great addition.”
Williams coached the Power to their maiden AFL flag in 2004 and spent time at GWS and Richmond as an assistant coach.
The 62-year-old also had coaching stints with VFL club Werribee and Ajax in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
