Axed Collingwood duo quiet in Pies VFL win

Axed Collingwood duo Mason Cox and Will Hoskin-Elliott were quiet in the Pies’ VFL win over Werribee, however there were good signs from some of the club’s recent draftees.

The Pies led narrowly at each change and hung on to claim a 69-62 win in a highly contested clash against the Michael Barlow-coached Bees at Avalon Airport Oval.

Last year’s pick 30 Caleb Poulter drifted forward mid-way through the final term and booted what proved to be the match-winner. The left-footed South Australian impressed between the flanks, as did 2019 draftee Jay Rantall (25 disposals).

Bicks drilled down on Adelaide's midfield mix, and Matt Crouch's spot in the side.

Cox and Hoskin-Elliott hit the scoreboard, but failed to put in commanding performances that would likely force Nathan Buckley’s hand at selection.

First-year forward Ollie Henry (2.2) showed glimpses of brilliance but lacked polish, while father-son Pie Will Kelly was deployed down back and had some good moments.

Back up big-man Max Lynch (33 hitouts) also battled manfully against former Port Adelaide and Carlton ruckman Matthew Lobbe.

Werribee - 9.8 (62)

Collingwood - 10.9 (69)
