Should Hawthorn entertain a trade for Wingard?

Hawthorn has some big list management decisions to make as a rebuild now looks inevitable.

Hawks great Dermott Brereton says his former club should entertain a possible trade for Chad Wingard, but only if an appropriate offer was made.

Hawthorn sacrificed picks 15, 35 and defender Ryan Burton to land Wingard in a high-profile deal with Porth Adelaide at the end of 2018.

Into his third season at the Hawks, the 27-year-old has been solid without hitting the All-Australian heights he reached at the Power.

Brereton was asked about Wingard and the thought of a potential trade on SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“You don’t go to Chad and say, ‘hey, we’re going to shop you around’, but you can let it be known that he’s a gun for hire. He’s a fantastic player,” the five-time premeirship Hawk said.

“I’m just thinking out loud, he’d be awesome at Geelong right now.

“What you’ve got is a very good player who is worth something to you because he’s still got five or six years of footy left in him.

“If a team comes to him and says, ‘hey, we’re in a position like Geelong 2020-2021, we want to reload, we’ve got the cattle, what’s he worth to you?’

“You’d have to entertain it, but he’s such a good player, you’re not giving him away.

“He’s worth something to Hawthorn and he’s a darn good player, so the offer has to be good for the Hawks, then I’d think they would say, ‘that position can be utilised for some serious forward planning and progression’.”

Wingard, a dual All-Australian, is contracted to Hawthorn until the end of 2022.

The midfielder/forward has kicked 266 goals in 184 games for the Hawks and Power since debuting in 2012.

He kicked two goals and had 13 score involvements from 21 disposals in Hawthorn's loss to North Melbourne.
