“I didn’t expect it”: How recruit has even surprised his Swans teammates

Tom Papley admits he has been very surprised by what Tom Hickey has delivered for the Sydney Swans this year.

The ruckman made the move to Sydney from West Coast last trade period and has been widely regarded as one of the best recruits of the 2021 season to date.

According to Swans teammate Papley, the 30-year-old big man is loving his role as number one ruck as he continues to amaze those around him.

“He’s been amazing,” Papley said on SEN Breakfast.

“Not just on the field, but off the field with his leadership and everything. On the field he’s been incredible.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect it and I don’t think many other people expected how good he was. He’s just been a back-up ruckman his whole career. To be that number one man, he’s really taken it on himself.

“I’m loving him, he’s a great bloke, such a nice guy and he’s really brought energy within the team.”

Hickey is averaging a career-best 16 disposals, close to six clearances and a tick under 22 hit-outs across his nine games in Swans colours.

He returns to the side for Saturday’s clash with St Kilda having missed last weekend’s win over Carlton with knee soreness.

Another of Papley’s teammates who has not quite reached Hickey’s heights this season is promising youngster Nick Blakey.

The former No.10 draft pick finds himself out of the Swans line-up right now but Papley is adamant he will break back in by season’s end.

“He was in the side a few weeks ago. I think he’s just trying to find some form,” he added.

“Because we’re going so well, when you’re out of a bit of form it’s hard to stay in the side with the young guys we’ve got coming through.

“I’m sure he’ll be back in the team at the end of the year. I love ‘The Liz’, he’s one of my good mates, and I love watching him play.

“He’s such a good kid and I’m sure he’ll be back out there soon.”

Papely and Hickey will look to continue their strong 2021 form when the Swans, who sit sixth on the ladder, look to improve their 7-4 record against the Saints at the SCG.
