Hawthorn assistant coach Chris Newman says he is yet to be approached by Carlton.
Sportsday co-host Sam McClure recently reported that the Blues are sounding out possible candidates for assistant coach positions, with Newman high on Carlton’s “hit list”.
Newman, a VFL premiership coach with Box Hill in 2018 and 268-game Richmond champion, wants to stay with the Hawks and has opened contract talks with the club.
“I received a few messages from other people saying, ‘What’s going on here?’” Newman told AFL Nation.
“It was the first I’d heard of it. There’s not a lot of truth to it to be honest.
“It’s one of those things where at this time of year there’s a bit of a coaching merry-go-round, there’s a lot of speculation around.
“I’m committed to the Hawthorn footy club. I’ve loved my time here.
“We’ve been speaking (about a new contract) … hopefully things progress by the end of the season.”
Newman is looking after Hawthorn’s defence after spending a year as the club’s stoppages coach.
The ex-Tigers skipper was named the VFL Coach of the Year in 2017.
Changes to Carlton's team of assistant coaches for 2022 are expected as they undertake a mid-season football department review.
