Former Western Bulldog captain Bob Murphy has revealed an interesting rumour surrounding AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, who is said to be considering a career shift.
In light of Brisbane’s winning bid to host the 2032 Olympics, Murphy believes McLachlan has been offered a chance to lead those Olympic Games, which are 11 years away.
“A little birdie has told me that with the recent news Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympic Games, Gillon McLachlan, AFL CEO, has been sounded out to be the CEO of that Olympics and is weighing up that as his next step,” Murphy said on SEN’s Bob and Andy.
“Just watch this space, put that little seed in the dirt.”
Murphy’s co-host Andy Maher said the move makes sense for the renowned footy operator, who is in his seventh season in charge at the AFL.
“That makes so much sense," he said.
"Do that job, international exposure, IOC positions there after if he wants, introduction to a whole new level of sport administration and executives.
“It sort of feels like it would be an appropriate and understandable next step.”
McLachlan is credited with successfully guiding the AFL throughout one of the game’s most troubling periods in the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the strong introduction and growth of the AFLW.
