The AFL has pulled the plug on the remainder of the VFL season.
The league however has not yet given up hope on playing the VFLW Grand Final.
Victoria’s never-ending lockdown forced the league to first cut all-but the last round of the home-and-away season before opting to advance straight to finals.
The news that we will remain in stage four lockdown restrictions going forward has left the league with no choice but to make the call.
In addition to canning the season, no premiership will be awarded and there will not be a JJ Liston Trophy handed out.
Richmond remains reigning premiers from the 2019 season, meaning new Collingwood coach Craig McRae remains the last coach to win a VFL premiership.
Collingwood and Geelong players wait anxiously for news surrounding the VFLW Grand Final, which is in the same limbo.
VFLW season awards will still be announced as per normal.
If cancelled, the Magpies, who won the 2019 flag, will remain the last team to have won a VFLW premiership.
The 2021 VFL season was the first to expand across borders and include teams from New South Wales and Queensland.
One of those Queensland teams in Aspley has opted not to continue with the VFL going forward, opting to enter the QAFL.
