Carlton’s appointment of Michael Voss has been lauded by club legend Stephen Kernahan.
The Blues on Thursday announced the signing of the Brisbane champion on a three-year deal to step into the role recently vacated by David Teague.
Coaches have been a problem area for the proud club in recent times and this latest move, along with the addition of Greg Williams as director of football and Brian Cook as CEO, is seen as the dawn of a new era at Princes Park.
Two-time premiership captain Kernahan, who was heavily involved at the club when they attempted to lure Voss back in 2007, sees the appointment as a “line in the sand day” for the Blues who have failed to play finals since 2013.
“I’ve got a good mate who is there as the new footy director, Greg Williams, which is great,” Kernahan said on SEN Breakfast.
“They’ve got ‘Cooky’ to the club as CEO, who speaks for himself.
“We tried to get Michael Voss in the 2000s for a while to come along and sit under one of our coaches to take over one day.
“Here it comes again in 2021, so couldn’t be happier with the appointment.
“Everyone can forget how great a player Michael Voss was. It doesn’t make you a great coach, but he’s always had an aura about him.”
Voss, who departed his role as Port Adelaide assistant, was last a senior coach with the Lions in 2013 and Kernahan is confident he will be stronger in the job almost a decade down the track.
“I think he’s really had his head down, he’s learnt a lot about people in his time at Port Adelaide and he’s just gone about it the right way,” continued ‘Sticks’.
“I reckon he’s going to be really good the second time around.
“Our players will really need to get behind Michael Voss and I can’t wait to see that because it’s a line in the sand day for the club for mine.”
It has been an off-season of change for the Blues who have also recently installed Luke Sayers as the new president to coincide with the arrivals of Voss, Cook and the return of Williams in an official role.
