Fremantle ruckman Sean Darcy has claimed the Doig Medal as the Dockers’ best and fairest player for 2021.
Darcy, 23, enjoyed a breakout season in 2021, emerging as one of the competition’s most dominant ruckman.
He took the award on 222 votes ahead of veteran David Mundy (207) and Andrew Brayshaw (186) who rounded out the podium.
Darcy admitted he was “a bit embarrassed” to win the award ahead of Mundy on Saturday night.
“It’s been a crazy ride so far moving from Cobham over in Victoria to here, it’s been a great ride so far and like Andy Brayshaw said earlier, a premiership is the goal, we won’t rest until we get there,” Darcy said.
“It (winning the Doig Medal) still hasn’t sunk in at the moment, I really didn’t think I was going to get up, I thought David Mundy had it for sure so I’m a bit embarrassed to be up here. He was an unbelievable player this year. It’s a bit weird but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.”
Darcy averaged 16.6 disposals, 4.3 marks, 28.5 hitouts and 4.7 clearances in his stellar season.
