The two Carlton players that have to lift in 2022

Brendon Goddard says Carlton pair Will Setterfield and Jack Martin “need to lift” if the club is to improve in 2022.

The Blues are currently embarking on significant change both on and off the field, installing Michael Voss as the club’s new coach as well as appointing a fresh CEO in Brian Cook.

They’ve also recently signed restricted free agent George Hewett, and will hope to welcome gun young midfield gun Adam Cerra to the club in the coming days once a trade is completed.

Goddard singled out both Setterfield and Martin as two players the Blues needed more out of, saying they had to find more consistency in their game moving forward.

“A man that needs to lift is (Will) Setterfield,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“He has all the attributes, he probably played his best football two years ago as an inside midfielder out of necessity because they had a number of injuries.

“He had a really poor year, he struggled to get into the team and play consistently, I’m not sure why he hasn’t done what we would’ve hoped. He’s a man that needs to lift.

“Jack Martin also needs to lift, he’s highly paid and needs consistency, they need more out of him. These are the guys that will take Carlton to the next level from a list point of view alongside a new coach and game plan.”

AFL Media reported on Monday that fringe Western Bulldog Lewis Young has also requested a trade to the Blues, with Voss poised to welcome several new faces ahead of the 2022 season as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 13th-placed finish in 2021.
