West Coast seems likely to offer a late pick for wantaway Carlton player Sam Petrevski-Seton, but is that fair?
The Eagles currently have a bounty of selections, including picks 10, 29, 35, 49 and 65.
It was reported on Tuesday that they currently want to part with pick 49 for the former top 10 draftee, but Kane Cornes doesn’t believe that is reasonable.
“I think pick 49 is ridiculous,” Cornes told SEN’s Whateley.
“I think the suggestion of a caller, (pick 61 and Petrevski-Seton for pick 35), even that is a little bit light on I would’ve thought.
“Carlton would’ve wanted a bit more, but that is fairer than 49.”
Petrevski-Seton had a poor 2021 season, dropped on multiple occasions after struggling as former coach David Teague moved him from half back, to the wing and then to half forward.
The 23-year-old, however, has played 93 games since debuting in 2017 and impressed early in his career as a midfielder, before being thrust into defence, where his development has since stalled.
His talent is clear, even if 2021 wasn’t his year.
Stephen Silvagni, who drafted Petrevski-Seton, said on Trade Radio that he feels the Blues have been playing him out of position.
Cornes wonders whether the Blues will simply let him walk through the pre-season draft, if a late draft pick is all that is offered.
“At what point do you make a stand and say ‘well, we got Jack Martin for nothing through the pre-season draft, we’re happy to let one go, clearly it’s not our preference, but you need to make a stand’,” Cornes said.
“And if pick 49 is all that is going to come back that way, that might be the way.”
Carlton currently holds picks six, 25 and 61 and needs to get trades done for Adam Cerra and Lewis Young.
Pick 49 from the Eagles, while not ideal, may simplify the Young deal with the Bulldogs.
