Wellington Orcas make their case to become the NRL's 18th franchise

The Wellington Orcas are aiming to become New Zealand's second and the NRL’s 18th franchise.

With the Orcas hoping to join the competition in just a few years' time, managing director and former NZRL Charmain Andrew Chalmers gave an update on their plea to join the competition on SEN 1170 Mornings with Matt White, detailing how the New Zealand-based team would fit in.

“The most likely outcome, I think, is going to be an expansion in New Zealand that would link off the 2028 season,” Chalmers said.

“If you look at the structure of the TV rights deal at the moment, the Foxtel deal was increased to 2027 … and I know the Nine deal expires at the end of next season. If there’s going to be expansion, they’re going to be timing it around the TV rights.

“If that was the case, you’re looking at it from a New Zealand perspective and wanting to be in the market by 1 November 2026.”

Chalmers also laid out the financial situation for the Orcas, believing it would be possible to sustain the team.

“In reality you’re going to need $50 million in guarantees and at least $50 million in capital, and we will raise that,” Chalmers said.

“I think that’s the sort of number you’d need to be hitting for those timeframes in order to satisfy what the NRL will want to see.”

When asked if there was enough talent around to form and maintain another New Zealand rugby side, Chalmers said: “There’s no question about it.

“Just have a look at the roster for every NRL team now, have a look at the Super League sides, have a look how many New Zealanders are playing there.

“Then look beyond the top 25 and have a look at all the high-performance pathways, all the development teams, and have a look how many Kiwis are coming through.”

It comes after a 17th NRL licence is set to be allocated to the Redcliffe Dolphins in Brisbane, as they prepare to join the league in 2023.

Chalmers says 18 is a “better number because it’s going to give you an extra game”.

Chalmers was involved in the Orcas’ 2004 bid and will be looking to finally join the league for the 2028 NRL season.
