Champion trainers do it again as Hitotsu claims Victoria Derby

Hitotsu has claimed the $2.5 million Penfolds Victoria Derby in a spectacular two length win.

The three-year old colt under jockey John Allen was bolting for a run at the top of the straight but blocked behind a wave of horse but navigated to the outside to secure the big win.

Champion trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace are renowned for their ability to train distance horses and they once again showed their prowess with the victory in the famous race, run over 2500 metres for three year olds.

The winning colt was backed in late, jumping as a $4 favourite.

Hitotsu had never raced over more than 1600 metres prior to the run, but pulled away with ease to showcase plenty of potential.

Godolphin’s Alegron took second place, while Teewaters narrowly beat Raging Bull for third.

There was a noticeable cheer that echoed around Flemington when Hitotsu struck the front with 200 metres to go, sounds that haven’t been heard at the famous course for months.
