Stephen Coniglio insists there is no truth to the rumours that were circulating just a few months ago.
The GWS midfielder, who has just turned 28, was being linked with a return to his home state of Western Australia with Fremantle the club mentioned most frequently.
He ended up staying put with the Giants, the club for which he signed a big-money seven-year deal in 2019, and says there was nothing to the trade scuttlebutt that was doing the rounds.
“No truth to that at all,” he said on Sportsday WA.
“I was in Perth which obviously didn’t help. So wherever I went at that time, people were asking.
“There were a couple of rumours floating around in the media, but no truth to that at all.”
The 156-game Giant, who has been restricted to 23 games by injury over the past two seasons, admits he has struggled in recent times but is eager to see out his career with the club.
“I only signed a seven-year contract a couple of years ago and I want to be a Giant for life. I love it here in Sydney,” he added.
“I’ve had a tough couple of years, no doubt. At times I love my back against the wall and have that eye of the tiger to want to come back and to want to really push forward with this team and try and win something.”
Coniglio will remain as skipper of the Giants, but has been joined by Toby Greene and Josh Kelly in a three-captain system.
He says there is no issue with sharing the role and is happy to lead the way with his peers after overseeing the group solo for the past two seasons.
“It sits well. Ultimately it’s a group decision,” he added.
“To be honest, that’s how it should be every year in terms of what the group wants. The leadership group and captains are there to serve the group.
“To have two guys like Josh and Toby is exciting for the group, exciting for them.
“I’ve obviously had the privilege to do it by myself for the last two years and previous to that we’ve had co-captains (Phil Davis and Callan Ward), so it’s not something we haven’t done before.”
