Controversial St George Illawarra forward Jack de Belin could make a shock international switch ahead of the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.
While he’s born in Australia and has represented New South Wales at Origin level, de Belin is reportedly keen to switch his allegiance to Papua New Guinea ahead of next year’s tournament.
The 30-year-old qualifies for PNG via his grandmother and the Kumuls are well and truly considering him for selection.
National coach Michael Marum told AAP that he felt de Belin was interested in the move and he believes the country would welcome the lock forward.
“Jack is eligible,” Marum said.
“Through our coaching group, John Wilshere talks to all the players and the clubs about selection.
“Jack was keen and I’m sure if he took the opportunity he would love it.
“He would come in and mix in really well with the other boys.
“I’m sure the boys would love him and the coaching staff and all the country would welcome him.”
De Belin recently spent two years out of the NRL fighting sexual assault charges.
Those charges were dropped in May and he returned to play 11 games for the Red V in 2021, averaging 109 run metres.
