Parramatta sent out an early statement ahead of the 2022 season proper on Saturday, beating reigning premiers Penrith 36-0 in their final trial match.
While the Panthers had only eight premiership players in their line-up, the Eels will still be thrilled with their domination of the clash with halves Mitchell Moses and Dylan Brown in particular putting in strong displays.
Although the Eels should be buoyed with how they played, Matty Johns warned Parramatta fans not to get ahead of themselves as Brad Arthur’s side often starts the season on fire before burning out late.
“From the Parramatta point of view, if I’m an Eels fan I’m very cautious with celebrating or getting ahead of myself,” Johns said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“What we see with Parramatta is that they get out of the blocks quickly and fade as the season goes on.
“So, if I’m Parramatta, it’s great, it shows what they’ve got about them and that they’re capable of having a really good season.
“But, the big question will be asked about two thirds into the season.”
While Johns wasn’t reading too much into the overall result, he does expect Penrith coach Ivan Cleary to be disappointed with the effort his troops gave in front of their home fans.
He believes that they’ll need to learn quickly how to adapt to being the hunted instead of the hunter.
“For Penrith … it’s just really hard to go back-to-back,” Johns said.
“You look at the pattern of teams that stay at the top for a long time, it’s hard and it’s difficult.
“For the young Panthers, it’s tough, they’re going to play a side that’s at their best every week that wants to knock them over.
“I think that Ivan will go back, look at some of the effort areas and say, ‘Okay boys, let’s get our heads on because these things aren’t just going to happen’.”
The Panthers and Eels open up their home and away seasons with Round 1 clashes against the Sea Eagles and Titans respectively.
