Melbourne CEO provides positive contract update on premiership duo

Melbourne CEO Gary Pert has “no doubt” that Demons duo Angus Brayshaw and Luke Jackson will re-commit to the club for the long term.

Fresh off last year’s breakthrough premiership and after a strong start to the season, attention has naturally turned to the futures of two of the club’s most important players who are out of contract at season’s end.

Jackson continues to emerge as a quality forward/ruck, while Brayshaw has averaged over 25 touches (leading into Round 4) so far in 2022 and is a crucial midfield cog.

Despite the gun pair remaining without a deal beyond this season, Pert said he was supremely confident both would sign on with Melbourne in the coming months.

“If you look at the last (year) and our really core group of players that have signed long-term deals, there is no doubt they have taken contracts (lower) to keep the group together and I admire them for it,” he said on Sportsday.

“You talk about Luke Jackson – right at the moment we don’t know what he’s capable of because he just gets better and better.

“Angus Brayshaw is playing some of the best footy he’s ever played and he’s a superstar.

“I have no doubt these two players will be playing for us for a long period of time.”

Jackson is often associated with a potential return to Western Australia while Brayshaw has constantly been linked with both Fremantle and West Coast as well.

Pert also confirmed that Simon Goodwin’s contract extension announcement was imminent, with the premiership coach’s deal also running out at the end of 2022.
