Report: Carlton AFLW stars to join rival expansion club

Carlton AFLW stars Maddy Prespakis and Georgia Gee will join expansion side Essendon, per AFL.com.au’s Riley Beveridge.

Prespakis, who won the Blues’ best and fairest on Thursday night, has reportedly chosen Essendon’s contract offer, which is believed to be as a marquee player and therefore gifts the 21-year-old more benefits, according to the Herald Sun.

After her best and fairest win, Prespakis reaffirmed her desire to leave a “legacy” on the AFLW, referencing superstars Daisy Pearce and Erin Phillips.

She also grew up a Bombers fan.

Meanwhile, Gee had developed into an important cog in Daniel Harford’s forward line.

She kicked five goals in 2022 and averaged 11 disposals and three marks per game in her 10 matches this year.

Carlton suffered a frustrating season in 2022, finishing 8th on the AFLW ladder after winning three of their last four games.

Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney will all join the competition next season as the league evolves to 18 clubs.

An August start date for the next season has been floated and is still being discussed.
