The Brisbane Broncos have joined the race to sign Melbourne Storm star Cameron Munster according to SEN’s Michelle Bishop.
Munster, 27, comes off contract at the end of the 2023 season with the five-eighth reportedly on the radar of up to seven clubs.
While it’s been reported that Munster wants to remain in purple, it’s believed the Storm have offered their star playmaker significant unders, causing the NRL’s newest franchise the Dolphins to up the ante in their pursuit of the star.
Along with the Dolphins, Bishop believes the Brisbane Broncos will now attempt to bring the superstar back to his home state of Queensland from the 2024 season.
“I’m going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons this morning,” Bishop said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“There’s whispers now that the Brisbane Broncos are about to enter the race (for Cameron Munster).
“They’re desperate for a long-term number six, they’ve changed their halves four times across the first seven rounds.
“Tyson Gamble will obviously partner Adam Reynolds against the Dogs, but the Albert Kelly and Billy Walters situation just isn’t doing it for them.
“So, we’re hearing whispers this morning that the Brisbane Broncos will now enter that race.
“Let’s be brutally honest about this, there will be a fair few egos with Munster from two teams based up there in Queensland.
“This could get very interesting, oh to be Cameron Munster.”
SEN host Jimmy Smith believes the situation between the Broncos and Munster could get “really spicy” due to the bad blood between the two powerhouse clubs.
“The added spice of that one with the Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm is that Dave Donaghy went from the Storm and had to sit out (before becoming Broncos CEO),” Smith said.
“The Storm never recruit representative players but they took Xavier Coates from the Brisbane Broncos, it’s a bit of a tit-for-tat.
“They (Brisbane) tried to get Craig Bellamy, this is really spicy.”
It’s believed the Storm have offered Munster an extension worth near $750,000 a year, while his value on the open market could be north of $1 million per season.
