Saints stars dominate and Tigers youngster puts hand up for debut in Saturday VFL action

A whopping six games of VFL have been played on Saturday with one still to come, numerous clashes providing significant ramifications for AFL selection.

Brisbane pumped Coburg by 65 points earlier in the day, but what will please senior coach Chris Fagan the most is the form of Mitch Robinson.

The Lions’ winger was axed earlier in the season from the AFL side but has responded at VFL level, stringing together two impressive games, including Saturday’s performance of 31 disposals, nine marks and four clearances.

He was well supported by Rhys Mathieson (36 disposals), while Will Ashcroft (29 disposals, six clearances) continues to show he’s in contention to be the first pick of the 2022 AFL National Draft.

For Richmond in their 37-point win over Port Melbourne, 2021 draftee Tyler Sonsie proved he’s not far away from an AFL debut by racking up 30 disposals.

Sonsie, pick 28 in last year’s draft, has been on the edge of selection for several weeks, however in credit to the 19-year-old he continues to front up, also delivering a game-high seven inside 50s.

Down at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham recorded a five-goal win over a wayward Northern Bullants side in what was Hunter Clark’s first game back.

The talented Saint suffered a shoulder injury in Round 1 against Collingwood and returned via the VFL on Saturday, collecting 26 disposals.

He was joined by AFL teammate Jack Billings playing his second game back. He now appears set for a senior recall after recording 26 disposals.

Meanwhile, Mitch Owens - who played a single game for St Kilda earlier this year – also wouldn’t be far away from a recall, looking classy with the ball in hand to record a game-high eight inside 50s.

The evening game saw Geelong and North Melbourne clash at Arden Street, the Roos VFL side currently the lowest-ranked AFL reserve team besides Essendon.

The Cats couldn't take full toll, but did enough to record a 77-58 victory.

Gary Rohan, playing his second consecutive VFL game as he continues his return from injury, looked good for his 17 disposals but couldn’t manage a goal, the 30-year-old being experimented in different positions this year.

Luke Dahlhaus also featured in the match after being dropped from the AFL side, gathering 25 disposals and five inside 50s.

Carlton's VFL clash with Frankston begins at 7.05 tonight in the final reserves game of the day.
