Hawks great “completely and utterly comfortable” with Hird coaching again

Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton would be “completely and utterly comfortable” if James Hird landed another senior coaching role in the AFL.

With Leon Cameron stepping down as GWS coach after Sunday’s game against Carlton, Hird has been mentioned as a potential replacement.

The former Essendon captain and coach joined the Giants in a part-time capacity as a leadership consultant in January.

Hird resigned as Bombers coach in August 2015 amid the fallout from the supplements saga that rocked both the club and the AFL.

“James can quite obviously coach … it might make a few feathers get ruffled,” Brereton told SEN’s The Run Home.

“I did care about it, but the time’s past, he’s done his time.

“As a footballing person who loves the sport, who loves the code, I would be completely and utterly comfortable with James to have a job somewhere of a prominent note in the AFL.

“He’s done his time.”

Brereton added: “The people in the critical positions (at the Bombers), they erred, whether you can say they were set up or they didn’t know…

“We know that prior to this situation, James Hird is an exceptional character.

“A really, really fine statesman of the game who’d always been wonderfully presented. As I said, he’s done the time.

“I can see no reason why you wouldn’t at least ask him the question.”

Hird has been linked to the Giants’ coaching position along with Alastair Clarkson and Mark McVeigh, who will replace Cameron as interim coach for the remainder of the season.
