THE AFL has opened an investigation into the restaurant fight between Steven May and Jake Melksham that left the latter needing surgery on his hand.
Melbourne suspended May and ordered both players to do community service after Melksham punched May in an altercation at swish Prahran eatery, Entrecote, on Sunday night.
But the AFL has now set its own integrity department on the matter to ensure it is satisfied with the outcome.
It should not be assumed that the league is intending to sanction the players further.
But the AFL released a statement on Thursday night, which read:
“No matter what the situation or circumstances, violence is never the answer.
“As professional footballers, as people, we expect better and while the club has taken matter extremely seriously, the AFL is currently conducting its own investigation.”
