Nick Riewoldt suggested on Monday night that Collingwood can win the premiership this year.
On Fox Footy, the St Kilda champion spoke of the in-form Magpies who have won six on the trot to sit sixth on the ladder.
Riewoldt cannot see a weakness in their game under Craig McRae and believes the Pies are good enough to genuinely contend in 2022.
“The more and more I see of the Pies, the more and more I think they are in contention to win it this year,” Riewoldt said.
“There’s not a weakness within their game.
“I think they can win it.”
SEN Breakfast’s Tim Watson and Garry Lyon discussed Riewoldt’s opinion and whether or not they believe Collingwood should be classed a legitimate flag threat.
Watson floated that there could possibly be a weakness regarding key defender Darcy Moore and how long he is sidelined for with his hyperextended knee.
Watson said: “He (Riewoldt) doesn’t think they have a weakness, do you think they have a weakness?
“At the moment, they do have a weakness and that is Darcy Moore is injured, won’t be playing and we don’t know when he’s going to return. The good news was he hasn’t done his ACL.
“They haven’t ruled him out (for this week), but the suggestion is he won’t play for three or four weeks.
“If he’s back, does that mean that Nick Riewoldt is right in your mind and that is that they don’t have a weakness?”
Lyon cannot see too many issues, but suggests that their ninth-ranked attack could potentially become a problem.
“Have they got a weakness? Not an obvious one,” he said.
“If I was concerned by anything, it would be their ability to kick 100 points in big games.
“They (almost) did it against Melbourne, so that’s (significant).”
Watson added: “They may not need to though, because their defence is pretty good.”
Lyon responded: “Their defence has been good.
“I think it might be one of those years where you get it right at the right time of the year, then you could be a chance.”
In conclusion, Lyon says the Pies are doing everything right in getting themselves into a good position to launch, however, winning a premiership is a whole new level.
“They’ve won six on the trot, they’ve got the Kangaroos coming up this weekend, you’d suggest they’re going to win that game for seven wins in a row,” he added.
“They’re way, way, way ahead of where I thought they were, that’s what I would absolutely say, which is neither here nor there.
“But premierships are a whole ‘nother thing.”
Under McRae, the Magpies have a win-loss record of 10-5 and a percentage of 106.1 as they prepare themselves for the business end of the home and away season.
Next up is the Roos at the MCG on Saturday before fixtures against Adelaide (in Adelaide), Essendon (MCG), Port Adelaide (MCG) and Melbourne (MCG).
