The only “major concern” lingering for Melbourne ahead of finals

Can Melbourne win the premiership if their forward line doesn’t improve?

Tim Watson and Garry Lyon believe it is something they must solve.

The Demons remain on top of the ladder, but Watson still sees their key forwards in particular as an aspect of their game not functioning as they would like.

“I look at Melbourne and to me, that’s the area they need to improve, and they can, but right now the functionality of their key forwards is a major concern for me,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

Former Melbourne captain Lyon adding: “It is. It’s the one area they’ve got to get right.”

“They’ve got generational midfield talent. Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver might be the two best modern day players Melbourne has ever had, and that’s saying something.

“The backline is sensational. The forward line is the work in progress.

“Ben Brown is not in great nick. Tom McDonald’s not there, Bayley Fritsch hasn’t really hit his straps. I think it’s a challenge for Simon Goodwin, but they’re on top of the ladder so you can’t argue too much.

“But to win another premiership, they’ve got to get that part of it right.”

Melbourne faces one of their biggest challenges of the season on Thursday night, taking on the Cats in Geelong.

They will be hoping to regain ruck pair Max Gawn and Luke Jackson for the clash.
