High-profile Essendon players want Ross Lyon to “take control” as new coach

Senior Essendon players want Ross Lyon to be appointed their next coach in order “take control” of the club, according to SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund.

Essendon is currently in the process of finding their next senior coach, after the club parted ways with Ben Rutten at the end of their season.

The likes of Robert Walls and Jordan Lewis are part of the subcommittee to select their next coach, with Edmund revealing that some of the club’s most high-profile players have urged the board to appoint Ross Lyon to help reset the Bombers.

“There’s a group of players at Essendon who want Ross Lyon to take control of the club,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“The feedback I’ve been given is some of the big names in that playing group want a strong hand and someone to really come in and take the bull by the horns and Ross Lyon would obviously be that man.

“With Ross Lyon, he is the guy who I’m told the players want. But how much saw would the playing group realistically had?

“(The other question) is whether Ross Lyon will subject himself to the process.”

Essendon finished the season languishing in 15th place, winning just seven games in 2022.
