Geelong skipper Joel Selwood has the rare chance to step away from the game on top after leading his side to the 2022 premiership in Saturday’s Grand Final against Sydney.
The win marked Selwood’s fourth premiership across his 355-game career, while he still proved he has what it takes to make an impact on the big stage as he kicked a goal while having 26 disposals and six score involvements in a huge performance.
The 34-year-old told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show that he will make his decision whether to play next year or not this week.
“I feel good, we’ll talk throughout the week with the club,” Selwood said.
“There’s a bit to go through, I’ll speak with people that have been watching me and seeing how I’ve been going.
“It’s not just a decision for myself.”
If Selwood does retire, Geelong will go in search of a new captain with plenty of experienced Cats having the credentials to take the mantle.
Speaking on SEN’s Crunch Time, Gerard Healy, Kane Cornes and Gerard Whateley discussed who could be the club’s next skipper.
Healy: “Who is the next captain of Geelong?”
Cornes: “Gerard, you’ve got a view that Dangerfield may be it?”
Whateley: “I think if Joel retires, Dangerfield will be the short-term captain.
“Then, Tom Stewart has it in him, or aspects of it in him, but I’m not sure necessarily if he’d want to be the formal captain.”
Stewart and Dangerfield were Selwood’s vice-captains in 2022 with the latter holding that position since 2017.
