Demons “steal” Grundy in trade as Magpies pick up Crows tall for late pick

Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy has officially been traded to Melbourne.

The Demons parted with pick 27 in this year’s draft to secure the two-time All-Australian, which SEN’s Sam Edmund believes could prove a steal for the 2021 premiers.

“It’s pick 27, and I tell you what, that’s an absolute steal for mine,” Edmund said on AFL Trade Radio.

“They part with pick 27 for an All-Australian calibre ruckman who I think can absolutely get back to that.

“He’s 28 years of age, his motivation would be through the roof and they get him on a discounted rate too.”

Grundy still has five years remaining on the seven-season mega-extension he inked with Collingwood in 2020, keeping him locked in at Melbourne until 2027.

With the ruckman’s deal reportedly worth $1 million per season, Collingwood are set to pay a portion of his salary across the duration of the remainder of his deal with the trade acting as somewhat of a salary dump.

The 28-year-old played 177 games for Collingwood, but only featured six times in 2022 after suffering a PCL injury on Anzac Day against Essendon.

With Grundy on the way out, Collingwood secured Adelaide tall Billy Frampton for a future-third round pick.

Frampton has played in multiple roles across his 24 AFL games with the Power and Crows, with Collingwood recruiting the 25-year-old as a key defender.

Grundy departs Collingwood as a two-time Copeland Trophy winner having claimed best and fairest honours in 2018 and 2019.
