“Exciting” halfback Sam Walker signs contract extension at the Roosters

The Sydney Roosters have extended playmaker Sam Walker’s contract for a further two years, locking him up until the end of the 2025 season.

The 20-year-old halfback has played 46 matches for the Roosters since he took the reins of their attack in 2021 and made great leaps in 2022 as he and five-eighth Luke Keary began to find cohesion in the halves.

SEN’s Michelle Bishop said that Walker’s extension is a massive vote of confidence for the young halfback as well as safety for the club.

“Stability is huge for any side and this is massive for the Roosters,” Bishop said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“(Walker is) so exciting and he’s extended at Bondi.

“The 20-year-old will be at the tri-colours until the end of 2025 so he’ll almost be a veteran at the club at the tender age of 23.

“He says he loves playing for the Roosters and is grateful everyday to be a part of such a great organisation.

“This extension means rival club aren’t permitted to table any offers.”

Walker was the second highest point scorer (211 points) in season 2022 and was only behind Valentine Holmes from the Cowboys.

Bishop said the extension was a smart play from the Roosters who have secured a halfback who is only on the rise and set to become one of the best in the game.

“He benefited hugely from his early days at the Roosters under Cooper Cronk,” she added.

“He was the Dally M rookie of the year in 2021.

“Walker also made Queensland’s Origin squad this year and was then selected in the Australian Prime Minister’s 13 team.

“What he’s achieved is just amazing.”

The Roosters are among the favourites for the 2023 premiership and will play the Dolphins in their opening game of the season.
