Cam Smith’s blunt warning to Broncos fans

Despite starting the season with four-straight wins, SEN rugby league expert Cameron Smith has urged the Brisbane Broncos fans to not get too far ahead of themselves.

After one of the worst finishes to a season in club history last year, the Broncos have shown plenty of signs of life in the early stages of 2023.

Brisbane has knocked off some impressive teams on their way to a 4-0 start, including the reigning premiers Penrith, and state rivals North Queensland and the Dolphins.

With the Broncos atop the NRL ladder after four rounds, Smith warned the Broncos faithful to remain patient before putting their side in Grand Final conversations.

“They’re sitting top of the table at the moment, if they continue on their little path that they’re on, you’d like to think they could stay there,” Smith said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“It wasn’t that long ago, six rounds to go in last year’s season, and I know they had a couple of things go against them last season, an injury to Herbie Farnworth, Patrick Carrigan got that four or five-week suspension for the hip drop, that’s when their season went downhill."

The Broncos’ shocking end to the season was highlighted by a monumental 135 points conceded in the final three games of the season.

“They were sitting in the top four with six rounds to go, that’s still in the back of my mind," Smith added.

“As good as they are travelling at the moment, unbeaten, at the top of the ladder, there is a lot of football to be played.

“It’s good to be excited about the way a team is travelling and performing but it’s very, very early in the season and we’ve got so much of the season to come.”

The Broncos will look to improve their winning record to five-straight when they host the only side yet to win a game this year, the Wests Tigers on Saturday night.
