We all love a list, no matter the topic.
Plenty of lists have been created out of Champion Data’s ratings and we have another one for footy fans to dissect.
Who are the top-rated midfielders under the age of 24 so far in 2023?
Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has listed the Top 10 based on their ratings points for the season to date.
“This is purely off the ratings, this is not against expectation,” he said on SEN’s Sportsday.
“This is purely looking at AFL Ratings points for the 24-year-olds (and under).”
Champion Data’s Top 10 midfielders 24 or under:
10 - Luke Davies-Uniacke, 23, North Melbourne
9 - Shai Bolton, 24, Richmond
8 - Adam Cerra, 23, Carlton
7 - Tom Green, 22, GWS
6 - Errol Gulden, 20, Sydney
5 - Zak Butters, 22, Port Adelaide
4 - Jai Newcombe, 21, Hawthorn
3 - Connor Rozee, 23, Port Adelaide
2 - Caleb Serong, 22, Fremantle
1 - Noah Anderson, 22, Gold Coast
Kane Cornes had earlier named his Top 10 young midfielders in the competition.
“Who is the best midfielder in the game under the age of 24?,” Cornes asked.
“It is frightening how hard this was to do. It was not easy.”
This is not necessarily based on this year’s form, but how good a footballer Cornes deems them to be.
Cornes’ Top 10 midfielders 24 or under:
10 - Caleb Serong, 22, Fremantle
9 - Bailey Smith, 22, Western Bulldogs
8 - Tom Green, 22, GWS
7 - Zak Butters, 22, Port Adelaide
6 - Chad Warner, 21, Sydney
5 - Errol Gulden, 20, Sydney
4 - Luke Davies-Uniacke, 23, North Melbourne
3 - Noah Anderson, 22, Gold Coast
2 - Connor Rozee, 23, Port Adelaide
1 - Sam Walsh, 22, Carlton
Special notes:
Cornes had Richmond’s Shai Bolton pegged more as a half-forward who rolls through the middle so did not include him.
He also had honourable mentions for Fremantle’s Andrew Brayshaw, Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell, Hawthorn’s Will Day and Geelong’s Max Holmes.
Port Adelaide’s Jason Horne-Francis, Brisbane’s Will Ashcroft and Adelaide’s Josh Rachele (midfield minutes dependent) are “coming with a bullet”.
Collingwood young gun Nick Daicos doesn’t yet qualify because he doesn’t spend enough time in the midfield.
