Who doesn’t love a ratings system?
With the amount of data we now have at our disposal, there is many a way you can break down the numbers and make varying assessments.
At SEN, we don’t mind a list and a ranking, so have gone about creating our own type of ratings system based on statistics.
First cab off the rank are the forwards/attackers for season 2023 to date.
Kicking goals is the most important part of the game, but we can’t forget those who help set them up and provide the regular goal kickers with scoring opportunities.
In a bid to find out who is the most well-rounded forward (or attacker), we’ve put together a stats-based ratings system, weighting each of six categories that relate to scoring, and putting them up against the stats and dividing that number by the amount of matches played.
This is based on what we value most from a player.
The points for the rankings have been weighted as follows:
- 6 points per goal
- 4 points per goal assist
- 3 points per mark inside 50
- 3 points per tackle inside 50
- 2 points per score involvement
- 1.5 points per inside 50
- 1 point per behind
To be eligible, players must have played at least half the matches for the season, making the threshold seven at this point of the campaign.
Note: You’ll find one or two names on this list who might not be classed as forwards, who spend most of their time playing outside forward 50, but must be included due to their impact on the scoring capabilities of their respective teams.
GWS captain Toby Greene rates on top due to his all-round ability both inside and outside attacking 50.
Greene has kicked 36 goals (ranked 5th in the AFL), has provided 14 goal assists (ranked equal 6th) and 101 score involvements (ranked 6th), while he also ranks in the top 20 for tackles inside 50, and inside the top 30 for marks inside 50 and inside 50s.
The Giants star is almost five ratings points clear of Carlton’s reigning Coleman Medallist Charlie Curnow who is three ahead of Hawthorn’s Mitch Lewis.
The emerging Hawk has played the least amount of games of any player on the list with eight, but his averages hold their own. Lewis sits 2nd for average marks inside 50 and 7th for average goals.
Sitting fourth is Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron who slightly shades Adelaide veteran Taylor Walker, who leads the Coleman race with 43 goals.
Cats star Tom Hawkins, Port Adelaide’s Jeremy Finlayson, Melbourne midfielder Christian Petracca, Brisbane’s Joe Daniher and Demons sharp shooter Bayley Fritsch make up the Top 10.
