One of Australia’s most controversial sporting figures is set to earn at least $1 million for three months of work next year after signing a contract to play in China.
News Corp reports Liz Cambage has put pen to paper with the Sichuan women’s team based in Chengdu.
It’s a deal also reported to feature plenty of potential bonuses, with Cambage stating she’ll now be apart of “one of the strongest leagues in the world”.
“I have always loved my time in China and I am really looking forward to getting out onto the court again,” she said.
“It’s one of the strongest leagues in the world and I have played many seasons there over the years.
“Some of the best players in the world play in the league and it will be great to meet my teammates and the whole support team very soon.
“They have a great successful culture of embracing and backing everyone which is why they have been so successful as a club.”
It’s the latest chapter in an intriguing story for a former star of the Australian Opals, who fell out of favour in the leadup to the Tokyo games after alleged racism towards a Nigerian opponent.
It’s a claim Cambage denies and has previously put the heat on Basketball Australia making it up. She also claimed earlier this year she had “been in cahoots” with the Nigerian national team and was filing to represent them.
She departed the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks last year after both parties agreed to part ways, with chemistry reasons reported as the likely catalyst.
The WNBA max salary is $241,984 in 2024, less than a quarter of what Cambage is set to earn in China.
