Which AFL teams will make the 8 in 2024 (pick 8)?

Cooney: “In no particular order: Carlton, GWS, Melbourne, Brisbane, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Sydney and Gold Coast.”

“There’s been a lot of hoo-ha about Gold Coast’s Academy kids and Damien Hardwick being there. They’re cherry ripe, they should be making the finals next year.

“I think the Bulldogs, Adelaide, Essendon and St Kilda can make the eight as well.

“I didn’t have the Cats in there, even though they still have a handy forward line, I’m a bit worried about their midfield. I think they’re a few years away.”

Which AFL team do you dislike the most?

Cooney: “I don’t dislike any team now. When I was playing I wasn’t too fond of Port Adelaide. Whenever I went to play back home in Adelaide I used to cop a little bit of grief from over the fence. Adelaide was similar. Every time I went home to South Australia, I generally got a bit of a hostile response!”

Which AFL team is your second favourite team?

Cooney: “The Dogs and Essendon are equal first. Probably Geelong third given I live in the area now and it’s hard not to get swept up in the Geelong-mania down here.”

The AFL Rookie List should only be for players under the age of 25?

Cooney: “Strongly agree. It’s an absolute farce at the moment. Give kids an opportunity. Don’t just sign up the old blokes to save room on your salary cap.”

Putting team bias aside... the best midfielder in the AFL is:

Cooney: “Marcus Bontempelli. Easily.”

Who will be the best player in the AFL in 5 years?

Cooney: “Jason Horne-Francis, I think. Zak Butters around the mark.”

Putting team bias aside... the best key defender in the AFL is:

Cooney: “Sam Taylor. He is so hard to beat one-on-one and he intercepts. The only thing he doesn’t do elite yet is his kicking.”

Putting team bias aside... the best key forward in the AFL is:

Cooney: “I’ve still got it as Jeremy Cameron when fully fit, with Nick Larkey coming with a bullet.”

Putting team bias aside... which team will be the biggest improver of 2024?

Cooney: “Gold Coast. I think the time is now for the Suns.”

The AFL's Opening Round concept will be a success?

Cooney: “Somewhat agree, only because it’s the start of the year. I think everyone is always hyped for the start of the year no matter where it is played. We’ll all be excited for some footy.”

What should the bench look like in 2024?

Cooney: “I would like to keep it at four on the bench and no sub, but I would happy to have five. It does make it harder to organise rotations with five. It’s a heavy rotation with five on the bench. I don’t like any vests being used.”

The biggest issue the AFL must address?

Cooney: “I don’t know the state of grassroots and country leagues – I think it’s equalisation. I think we need to get to the stage where we have 20 teams and 19 rounds.”

If Tasmania is No.19, where should AFL team No.20 be?

Cooney: “Probably NT. I think Darwin deserves a team. They could play a few games in Alice Springs as well. If you live up there, you get used to the conditions. It would be a fortress at home.”

The AFL should push ahead with a national reserves competition ASAP

Cooney: “As long as it doesn’t affect those second tier competitions. As long as the SANFL and the WAFL and these other competitions are still strong and have enough money coming through, because we need to keep the respect for those leagues that have been around for generations. I played in the SANFL when I was 17 and it was a formidable competition and I’d hate to see it suffer.”

How should the AFL tweak the national draft?

Cooney: “I think you can increase the cost of matching the bids. If there’s a father-son or Academy in the top three, don’t make clubs trade picks 44, 45, 67 and 115 so they can match that bid. Increase how much it’s going to cost. I’m never going to say scrap the father-son or Academy picks because I’m hoping my young fella can play as a father-son one day!”

AFL clubs should be allowed to trade future picks more than just one year ahead?

Cooney: “Yes. I love the gamble of these clubs. You can get yourself into a position where you can win a flag or you can make a mess of the whole thing. I love the gamble of the whole thing. I’d go three years ahead.”

Who will win the 2024 AFL premiership?

Cooney: “I’ll take the easiest option possible and say Collingwood back-to-back.”
